What is the first step in making a safety plan?

The first step is identifying your personal warning signs—thoughts, moods, or behaviors that signal a crisis is building. Examples include feeling trapped, increased irritability, or withdrawing from activities. Write these down. This recognition is crucial because it allows you to implement your plan before the crisis peaks, giving you the best chance of effective intervention.

Can I create a safety plan without a therapist?

Yes, absolutely. While professional guidance is helpful, you can start a safety plan independently using free templates or apps. The key is to be honest and specific. Share the finished plan with a trusted person for additional support. If you have difficulty, contact a crisis line—they can walk you through the steps over the phone.

How do I talk to a friend about being part of my safety plan?

Choose a calm moment and be direct but gentle. You might say, “I’m working on staying safe, and I’d like you to be one of my contacts. I’ll call you if I’m struggling, and I need you to listen and check if I’m safe.” Provide them with a simple written version of your plan and clarify what you need—like staying on the phone or coming to your place. Respect their boundaries.

What if my crisis contact doesn’t answer?

That’s why you have multiple steps and backups. Your plan should include at least two personal contacts plus a professional resource like a crisis hotline (e.g., 988) or mobile crisis team. If your first contact doesn’t answer, move to the next without delay. You can also text a crisis line for immediate support, so you’re never truly alone.

Is it normal to revise my safety plan often?

Yes, it is completely normal and healthy to revise your plan as your mental health changes. Many people update it monthly or after significant events. Frequent revisions mean you are staying aware of your needs and actively managing your safety. Schedule a regular check-in with yourself or a therapist to ensure your plan remains relevant and effective.
